It offers a mixture of ancient civilizations, local traditions, lush landscapes and numeroous nature reserves. Spending your holidays in the Maremma means experiencing a myiriad of places and environments as fascinating as they are different from each other. Each visit to the Maremma is a new experience with new discoveries. There are long stretches of fully equipped beaches of fine sand accompanied by lush pine forests, tiny coves with sweet sounding names and crystal-clear water, deserted beaches against natural havens, uncontaminated islands in an enchanted sea, villages and castles that are austere and festive at the same time, gentle landscapes brimming with history and natural wonders. The Maremma has many locations of archeological, artistic and monumental interest. Many and widespread the traces left by the Etruscan and Roma civilizations in remote ages. In the Middle Ages the families of Aldobrandeschi, Lorena, Orsini and Medici left works and fortifications, many graceful towers, castles, fortresses. In Maremma there is no town or village that doesnt offer the visitor a view of beautiful landscape. Holidays in Maremma for a special atmosphere at all times of the year. The Maremma also means being among people who have always gathered the fruit of the land and enjoyed being together in every season; a special and inviting atmosphere for the visitor at all times of the year.In the heart of the Maremma region lies Grosseto, chief town of the province by the same name, which dates back to the upper middle ages. Most appealing is the historical center, enclosed in the beautiful town walls, the Cathedral, the Archeological and Art museum, the spectacular Cassero Senese where there is an interactive museum featuring Maremmas history. Just a few kilometers South of Grosseto youll find Alberese, today waiting room of the Maremma Natural Park. Despite the presence of man, the natural paradise has been safeguarded and today a Park and regional law ensure the preservation of this beauty. Wild herds of horses and Maremma oxen still frolic through the vast prairies, while wild boards and roe dears live undisturbed in the thick forests of the Uccellina mountains.Another interesting place to visit is Gavorrano, an old town with references to Dante (it was in the Castello di Pietra here that Pia deTolomei died). For many years Gavorrano has been active in the extraction of pyrite, which has left evident traces preserved and enhanced today by the Parco Minerario Naturalistico. Not to be missed is the town of Scarlino; the imposing fortress which dominates the entire town from above proves the strategic position which Scarlino always had over the plains below, spreading all the way to the Follonica Gulf.In Maremma there is no town or village that doesnt offer the visitor a view of beautiful landscape.
