COSTA DEGLI ETRUSCHI in Tuscany
|Costa degli Etruschi embraces the whole continental territory in the Province of Livorno, including from south to north the municipalities of Bibbona, Campiglia Marittima, Castagneto Carducci, Cecina, Collesalvetti, Livorno, Piombino, Rosignano Marittimo, San Vincenzo, Sassetta and Suvereto. It is called Costa degli Estruschi because of the numerous Etruscan necropolis found between the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia, that in origin was the only Etruscan town on the see; the denomination has extended subsequently to the entire shoreline of the province of Livorno. The Costa degli Etruschi is the land that enchanted the Etruscans, who lived there and exploited its enormous wealth. The Etruscans discovered the mines of the Fucinaia Valley, near Campiglia, and they are the ones who began the growing of olives and the viticulture that over the centuries have shaped the landscape of the hills of this area as they rise behind the sea. The powerful Etruscan fleet ploughed the Tyrrhenian Sea,sailing from the harbours of Vada and Baratti, while already in the 5th century Populonia coined its own money. After the end of the Etruscan period, this part of the Tuscan coast went under the first Roman domination, and then saw the birth of the feuds in the early Middle Ages. When, at the beginning of 1900s, some real pioneers like intelligent tour operators named this tiny piece of land kissed by sea, sun and green of its hills, Costa Fiorita, created without knowing, a tourist symbol that would be became famous during the years. Castiglioncello, Quercianella, Bibbona and the other resorts of Costa Fiorita, became places of cultural and refined tourism, with many important personages: writers, literaturels men and artists like Macchiaioli Painters who were among the best tourists and who immortalised the Coast in their famous Works. Art, culture, nature, this is the charming dose union that made famous this Coast. During the 60s Gassman, Sordi, Mastroianni and many others habitually patronised this beautiful place.Characteristics of the Costa degli Etruschi are the beautiful white beaches between Rosignano Solvay and Vada, but the coast is everywhere wonderful, from the northern beaches until the cape of Piombino.Piombino developed on the homonymous cape and is separated from the island of Elba by the Channel of Piombino. It has an ancient historical center, derived from the time in which it was the Etruscans´ port, in the surroundings of Populonia. The top of the cape is occupied by a square, from which - when the sky is clear - you can see the Archipelago Toscano and also Corsica. Another interesting place to visit is Castagneto Carducci, whose name derives from the word castagno (chestnut tree), therefore Castagneto has the meaning of forest of chestnut trees. In Castagneto Carducci, beyond to numerous charming churches, there is the famous Viale dei Cipressi, a road, among the most evocative of Italy, that connects the Oratorio of San Guido to the historical center of Bolgheri. The tree-lined avenue is closed and shadowy on both sides by a thick row of secular cypresses. If you like the beautiful sea you have to go to Rosignano Marittimo, characterized from the wide beaches with modern bathing establishments. Particularly famous are the so-called spiagge bianche (white beaches), situated along the coast between Rosignano and the hamlet of Vada. The sand has this unusual colour because of the presence of factories where the bicarbonate is treated, approximately a kilometer away from the coast.Holidays in Costa degli Etruschi means elegance, refinement but also simplicity due to the culture of these places and Tuscany in general. Nowadays Costa degli Etruschi presents itself again with the same ancient traditions: an unpolluted and beautiful countryside (UE Blue Flags), tourist structures not overwhelm by mass tourism but, in the same time, well organised to satisfy tourist actual exigencies. For all lovers of this kind of tourism that goes against the general trend and for all who want a relaxing and quiet atmosphere, wild rocky cliffs and fascination of the typical Tuscan country, it is necessary to follow Roman and Etruscan´s example who found in these places genuine, simple, but beautiful things.
Live the emotion of a holiday conceived around you!
