MOUNTAINS in Tuscany
|Take an emotional and colourful trip into the Tuscan mountains, there are hundreds of things to do.The Apuan Alps are spectacular, a unique experience which will leave an everlasting memory; visiting these mountains you ascend towards absolute whiteness, real cathedrals of bare rock running parallel to the sea and the Tyrhennian coast. Look at them from afar and they seem forever cloaked in snow, but it is only an illusion. It is the scar left by the marble which has been used by sculptors and architects from Michelangelo until today to clothe monuments and buildings. Carry on looking at them and they will seem wrapped in eternal silence, but this too is an illusion, because these rocks are the site of the fervent activity of courageous quarry men. Deafened by the echoing of the marble, the imposing quarries take your breath away. The perfection with which the diamond thread has cut the blocks and shaped the enormous steps in the heart of the mountain is astonishing. The thousands of years of age of the quarries is quite amazing. Here, ever since the Romans founded Luni there have been stories of men, treacherous roads, deadly drops and hard, hard work. If you look down, you will discover the water descending the slopes of Monte Sumbra which gave origin to the enormous basins, known as Marmitte dei giganti (the giants cooking pots), during the last Ice Age. Go further down and you come to the cave lovers paradise, the Corchia grottoes developing miles underground into the earths core. These caves are still being explored and new branches, connections, enormous rooms and galleries of stalactites are continuously being found. The Apuan Alps, at the heart of a natural park, are an enrapturing world that is impossible to forget. They are a unique and unexpected emotion.Go to Lunigiana and experience a world, a journey back in time.Like a fable, a hidden mechanism opens a secret door and you arrive in a landscape suspended in the past, there for those who want to feel its charm. Wherever you look you learn. Seize the moments of history that this lunar valley has left for visitors to inherit. And this land, green with chestnut and beech trees and scoured by clear waters, has seen many a traveller. This has always been its destiny, it is a passageway and a border, and thus a land to defend. So thought the Romans, the founders of Luni, and so believed those later, who secured a route to the sea through the Via Francigena. This is why there are castles, fortresses and fortified villages defining these horizons. Several still remain, but in feudal times, when enemies were everywhere to be seen and the small feuds fought for supremacy, there were around one hundred and sixty. The ones remaining bear witness to these bygone times for those who wish to listen. Their voices are ever fascinating for those used to hearing the whispers of noble and secret cities. Just think of the mystery surrounding the prehistoric stele statues and you will shiver at the sight of these sculpted and stylised stone idols. Divinities or chiefs, symbols or armed warriors with their ornate and prosperous women. This mystery is still open, the enigma still to be solved. Its hospitable and singular inhabitants, who feel neither Tuscan, Ligurian nor Emilian, have created a basic, balanced and tasty cuisine. Garfagnana is Nature.Say its name, and you evoke images of a proud and aloof land, practically isolated from the rest of Tuscany. A treasure chest enclosed between the Apuan Alps and the Appennines and scarred by the Serchio river. It is an unexpected landscape, revealing some of natures hidden secrets such as the Orrido di Botri, Tuscanys Canyon etched by the waters of the streams that dive headlong into this prehistoric chasm.A narrow gorge that sends shivers down your spine, with bushes growing on its walls, reaching towards the sky, arduously searching for that single strip of light that manages to sneak in. You can find the Grotta del Vento with its foot-bridge suspended high above these marvels and the fascinating names within - Baratro dei Giganti (The Giants Abyss), Salone dellInfinito (The Room of Infinity) - giving an idea of the sensations you can feel here. The Calomini hermitage and the story of a sacred image which appeared only here, in this place with its perpendicular slopes overlooking the valley of Turrite. Here a cave sanctuary was built where you can also stay. The Devils Bridge near Borgo a Mozzano will capture your imagination not only because of its appearance, but also because of the legend that goes with it. You will find flourishing traditions everywhere, with jousts and re-enactments of historical events, the singing theatre, handicrafts, and all this accompanied by culinary specialities based on chestnuts. Excursions in nature, simple and welcoming towns, good cooking and traditions is the recipe that Garfagnana has to offer. The Pistoian Appennine is the snowy mountain. A vision of snow-white peaks, a promise of gentle descents, and the certainty that you will go home with indelible memories.Spellbinding scenery all year round, dense in history, jewels of nature, the deep silence of valleys broken only by the flowing of streams.Ever splendid secular forests, magical when covered in snow. Snow... there are any number of stories linked to these mountains. How many champions have been born zigzagging on the white carpet of the challenging slopes of Abetone. These extraordinary events are experienced over and over in the living, changing nature.Being allowed into this world is the highest of privileges. The emotion of the sun filtering down to your walk through the woods looking for mushrooms or carefree walks in the open air with the perfume of colourful fields in flower. But also the passion of a descent through the pines, the joy of cross-country skiing. However you want to experience it, you just have to respect the laws of the mountain. If you listen, the mountain will have a lot to tell you. It will show you its beauty, the splendour of its glistening heights, prisms of light under the sun. There is so much to learn from these stupendous connecting valleys! There are so many opportunities to put things right in your mind. Rediscover mountain traditions, communal dinners, spontaneous and relaxed socialising, pure and healthy enjoyment. And how to forget the Monte AmiataAmiata is the mountain we have always imagined. The one a child draws on a blank sheet of paper: a great big triangle, or maybe a cone, with green slopes that are more jagged at the top and gradually become gentle meadows as you descend. With the sun shining on your back, the plain all around you and the heights at times covered in snowIt really is like that: formerly a volcano, it is imposing and majestic in its splendid isolation against the harsh Maremman landscapes and the gentle hills of the Crete Senesi. This is what you see from far off or with imaginative eyes, but its marvels increase when you go along its roads, visit its villages and walk along its paths.A great, never-ending forest of chestnut trees and, as you climb, beech trees with silver firs. A wood covering the whole mountain, broken up only by rivers and crystal-watered streams and pistes for winter skiing. Maybe you would like to meet roe and fallow deer and watch the wolves safe out of reach. Maybe you are just thinking of peace and quiet, total relaxation and walks, which, as well as getting you into shape, will also favour your appetite. Satisfying it is heavenly. The wine, oil, mushrooms, chestnuts, strawberries, raspberries, mountain honey, in short, the typical products of this landscape are of a quality and authenticity difficult to beat.If these are your wishes, you can stop dreaming. They are all here within reach, in this mountain of special and rare experiences, of exceptional simplicity and nature. Moreover, dont forget to visit the Casentino, land of never-ending woods and spiritual monuments, profound silence and transformation of the soul. This valley speaks the language of meditation and silence. Here you are overwhelmed by the colours, the atmosphere. The sacred forests speak to you and embrace you. You cannot resist them. Spirituality touches you deep down, in a natural, heart-felt way. You will feel emotions without understanding where they come from, you will communicate without speaking a word, you will feel richer than you ever could have imagined. The monks understood this and took care of the woods and in the Middle Ages established the fundamental rule that whoever cut down a plant would be punished. Enveloped in the forest are spiritual places such as the Hermitage of Camaldoli and the Santuario della Verna where Francis received his stigmata. From here you can admire the wonderful view with the Arno flowing through the valley. There is so much of Tuscany in Casentino. Dante dedicates many verses to it, the Arno rises here and licks its towns and villages with her waters. This area was the site of the battle of Campaldino between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, the medieval castles with lords and peasants working in the fields, the wood-cutters in the forest. It is not difficult to imagine this past, helped by the untouched landscape, ongoing popular traditions and gastronomic specialities such as scottiglia and potato tortelli. You can taste characteristic flavours, listen to ancient tales and share all this with the ever welcoming and friendly locals.Go into the mountains and discover your emotions again. Colours, smells, sounds and tastes snatched away from city pollution. Pure feelings about to be forgotten, but still intact in the Tuscan mountains. Waiting for you to explore are miles and miles of pathways for trekking, mountain biking, skiing, but also for pure contemplation and absolute rest.In these natural surroundings there are emotions for all tastes, and challenges of all shapes and sizes. So, which mountains The Mountains of Tuscany!
